Johnny’s Bar

Johnnys Bar LA

Highland Park’s nightlife would be nothing without Johnny’s Bar, a kind of rural “dive bar”  with a taxidermy buck head on the wall, a foosball and a pool table.
Plus tons of cheap but good drinks. Some say it is the place to get a Bloody Mary, supposed to be the best one. Listen to the jukebox with songs of Prince, Bowie, Hendrix, various punk bands, soul music, and more. It’s not a typical biker hangout but has a grungy feel.
It’s also not the place for tourists; it’s the place to be loud and get your drink on. It gets crowded, especially on the weekend. The crowd is mixed and gave the local neighbor bar 4 stars.

The Woods

The Woods LA

Not all lounges are cozy especially not in LA. If you are looking for one, you don’t have to go as far as Big Bear, just go to Hollywood on LA Brea. The ski-lodge designed bar has become a popular dive bar with good and cheap drinks.
The Woods features a star lit sky and  the interior’s is comprised of several different wood applications, from its Pecky Cedar walls to it giant teak cocktail tables and two Elk antler chandeliers. Some love it, some hate it. There is no grey zone. The dark dive bar is “in”, yes, despite the fancy neo-cabin decor, and gives you the feel of  sitting in a forest. If you are lucky you might see Hollywood stars such as Emily Blunt who obviously likes the cozy atmosphere and the tree stumps tables.

The Black Boar

Black Boar LA

Enough of California? Visit the Black Boar Bar and you think you are in a rustic Colorado lodge that is the meeting point of all handsome ski and snowboard instructors who cannot afford to mingle with the Aspen crowd.
Nightlife at the Black Boar starts later, you can bring your own pizza and warm your cold hands at the fireplace. You will meet an interesting crowd of Eagle Rock locals who are in general mellow and friendly. Sometimes the food comes via some food trucks which are parking outside. Black Boar’s specialty are English drafts, including Fuller’s ESB, Old Speckled Hen, Murphy’s and Strongbow Cider. All beers go for $5 a pull and well drinks cost $6 each.  The Boar roars 4 stars.

room 5 LA

ROOM 5 Lounge in Hollywood, close to Hancock park, is the venue for an eclectic mix of new music from hot area artists and cutting edge comedy together in an upscale, intimate atmosphere. In 1937 at the famous former “Swanee”, club owner Bob Lewis suggested that budding Jazz musician Nathaniel “Nat” Cole assemble a small band to work at his Swanee Inn. It is a cozy and quite small lounge, just right to listen to some good music. Open mic night supposed to be no entry fee, but you have insist on it.
The sequence could be: First dine downstairs at the Italian Amalfi Ristorante, then enjoy artists and bands in the genres of jazz, soul, singer/songwriter, country, comedy, pop and r&b upstairs at the Room 5. Yelp says they deserve four stars!

verdugo bar los angeles

The Verdugo Bar in Glassell Park is quite spacious and divided in a bar area, a lounge type area and patio with simple tables and chairs where the most people sit if they want to eat. From the outside you can recognize the bar because of its big Cocktail sign. Inside you find a huge beer selection, food you can get from rotating food trucks (they park outside, there is no kitchen) and a so called  “hipster” crowd. It’s the place to drink, hang out and dance to DJ music. Their annual Oktoberfest is very popular because it is all about beer. So when you go there keep in mind it is a casual beer bar and we are in LA. Be prepared for everything. The Yelpsters gave them four stars. Not bad aye?

cafe beaujolais los angelesCafe Beaujolais

Eagle Rock is an artsy suburbia community of Los Angeles with a great collection of restaurants. One of them is the French Cafe Beaujolais (after the popular French red wine). If you like escargot you should order them. They are perfectly cooked and seasoned and taste better than in France. A classic is the Filet Mignon which they serve with a stuffed tomato gratin, and for dessert a chocolate mousse. Or sip an onion soup and top your diner with a creme brule. All classic French cuisine – Bon appetit!
Yelpers think it is worth 4.5 stars – that’s almost a full house!

If you like to have a romantic dinner, the Cafe Stella is the place to go. Dine inside or on the secluded patio, or have a gals of wine first at the wine bar. Start with artichaut grille and a kir royale, followed by Coq au vin with mushrooms and pearl onions or a filet mignon served with potato and turnip puree. The beef tartare tastes like in Paris. Yelp stars four.

philippe the original los angeles

Philippe The Original

It is one of the oldest and best known restaurants in Southern California, and was established in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu, who claimed the distinction of having created the “French Dipped Sandwich.”
One day in 1918, while making a sandwich, Mathieu inadvertently dropped the sliced french roll into the roasting pan filled with juice still hot from the oven. The patron, a policeman, said he would take the sandwich anyway and returned the next day with some friends asking for more dipped sandwiches. Voila, the new sandwich was born.
The sandwich consists of either roast beef, roast pork, leg of lamb, turkey or ham served on a lightly textured, freshly baked French roll which has been dipped in the natural gravy of the roasts. Swiss, American, Monterey Jack or Blue cheese may be added. To accompany your sandwich we offer a tart, tangy cole slaw, homemade potato and macaroni salads, hard boiled eggs pickled in beet juice and spices, large Kosher style, sour dill or sweet pickles, black olives and hot yellow chili peppers. Philippe’s still prepares and serves close to 300 pounds of pigs feet every week and 40 gallons of home made mustard.
Every day they serve a different soup, the breakfast menu is splendid with pancakes and French Toast, but there are not the typical French dishes like you would expect. It sounds rather American but still, the quality counts. The crowd gave Philippe four stars so far but whatever they give, Philippe will be THE original forever.
