room 5 LA

ROOM 5 Lounge in Hollywood, close to Hancock park, is the venue for an eclectic mix of new music from hot area artists and cutting edge comedy together in an upscale, intimate atmosphere. In 1937 at the famous former “Swanee”, club owner Bob Lewis suggested that budding Jazz musician Nathaniel “Nat” Cole assemble a small band to work at his Swanee Inn. It is a cozy and quite small lounge, just right to listen to some good music. Open mic night supposed to be no entry fee, but you have insist on it.
The sequence could be: First dine downstairs at the Italian Amalfi Ristorante, then enjoy artists and bands in the genres of jazz, soul, singer/songwriter, country, comedy, pop and r&b upstairs at the Room 5. Yelp says they deserve four stars!

JLounge LA
JLounge LAJ Lounge lies in The Heart Of Downtown L.A. and is a newly remodeled Lounge with over 3 million in elegance and decor. It is a 25,000 SF venue, has 2 floors, 3 bars, an open air smoking lounge, a 10,000 SF patio and everything you need to enjoy live-music and DJs.
This venue has a pretty chill atmosphere. Once you walk up the stairs, you see a decent size bar where they serve drinks around ten dollars the drink. The patio with fire pit, VIP cabanas and of course the LA skyline view is something special indeed.
The restaurant with creations from Chef Ryan McKay’s (ex-L’Orangerie) features traditional American comfort food, such as fried crab cakes, ahi tartare, grilled rib-eye steak, fish of the day and braised short ribs.

The Yelp crowd gives three stars.

avalon hollywood
avalon hollywood

The Avalon at night

This venue has history! Back in 1927 it opened the doors as The Hollywood Playhouse and was designed in Spanish Colonial style. Later during the Great Depression it was the WPA Federal Theatre and used for government sponsored programs. Then in the 1940s it became the El Capitain or Paramount Theatre, and in the 1950s, still under the name of El Capitan, the theatre became a television studio, and it was from a set on its stage that President Richard Nixon delivered his famous “Checkers speech” on September 23, 1952.

The list goes on. After it had been the Jerry Lewis Theatre it was the famous Hollywood Palace with guests like Judy Garland and Louis Armstrong. Another day to remember: The punk band Ramones played their 2263rd and final show here on August 6th 1996 but it was already The Palace. In 2002 it became finally the Avalon and is nowadays one of Hollywoods most popular nightclub with live music and well known DJs.
The club has proven to be a fantastic venue with world-renowned performing artists, fair tickets sales, an enormous space with “killer” light displays  and awesome sound. It’s a club that hardly ever sleeps:

Edision LA

The Edision Downtown Los Angeles

The Edison, opening in 2007, is a blend of the past, present and future, not unlike the legendary nightspots The Cocoanut Grove and Ciro’s.  Some call it a hidden gem! The club is located in the sub-basement of the historic Higgins Building, and it used to be Los Angeles first ever power plant, built by Thomas Higgins.
The Higgins celebrated its’ 100th Anniversary in 2010, so it is an unusual venue for a nightclub indeed. The club combines science, art and industry which are the ingredients for an Art Nouveau-Gothic experience.
Tips: The entrance is hidden in an alley between two buildings, so watch out for that. Many of the club guests are dressed up in 1920′s flapper garb like in the good ol’ Hollywood times when downtown La was the place to go. The club emanates an old Hollywood glamor-Esq feel with all the dim lighting and upscale decor.
Inside there are  three levels and the top level has a small open, covered area for the smokers. It kind of reminds of RYE and FOREIGN CINEMA but it is four times bigger. decorated   There is not really a dance floor and to get a table on Saturdays you need to spend about $50 per person. But it’s worth it!  Also expect first class entertainment! Check out the event calendar of the venue.

What does the crowd say? It is not surprising that they gave 4 stars from 1658 reviews on Yelp – that’s a gogo!

Akbar LA

AkBar LA, Silver Lake

You could say that the Akbar is stylish with its marble floors, pointed archways and sultry glowing pendant lamps, and it is oriental as the name already is promising.
It is well known as a gay bar, but c’mon this is crazy Los Angeles and a hip bar is a freaking hip bar. Paast the autographed headshots of celebs like Prince, Miss Piggy, and Drew Barrymore you can find a cozy and intimate nook through the beaded curtain, as a second room offers a little ocean of sea-green cafeteria seats. Ideal for after-work cocktails or dates. The Akbar is also known for its wild crowd as the evening wears on. Who is the crowd? Gays, lesbian, creative types from music, fashion and film from mid 20s to 50s. And it is this crowd which crowned the bar with 4 Yelp stars.

The Echo LA
The Echo LA

The Echo

The Echo was located in a former Latin disco, so the sticky vinyl booths and mirrored walls may resemble the interior of a seedy strip club, but this place is about fresh sounds, not fancy digs. Every DJ-oriented night is different, and offers a chance to see and hear up and coming LA bands.
No happy hour specials;  everyday drink prices are the industry standards from $5.00 domestic beer, $6.00 import beer, $2.75 soda, alcohol starting from $5.00, and mixed drinks from $7.00. If you need to get your grub on, you can order from an extremely selective menu from a nearby pizza place and they will walk it over.
Depending on the band performing you might wait 2 hours to get in.
Dress code: hipster, casual.

Music: Indie, electro, UK rock and soul, live music, and more
